Just over 100 years ago ice companies were commonplace in Northern communities with access to clean lake or river water. In the winter months, once the water was frozen, blocks were cut from the ice and transported to warehouses to be kept insulated for use year round. Until the spread of home refrigeration by the 1930s, many homes used ice boxes, which kept food cold with large ice blocks delivered to the door.
